Work has commenced on the brand new Lidl Distribution Centre in Newbridge, Co. Kildare, a year-long project that will see up to 2,000 construction jobs created along with 100 full-time roles on completion.

Lidl has commenced work on its new Distribution Centre in Newbridge, Co. Kildare. The €100m, 54,000sq m development will serve Lidl’s network of stores in the Leinster area as a key part of the company’s 2018 investment programme. The development is expected to be completed by November 2019, creating 100 new jobs to add to the 250 roles at the existing Newbridge distribution centre.

The new project represents Lidl’s largest investment in Ireland since it debuted here in 2000. This year also includes the opening of ten brand-new stores including in Nenagh, Grangegorman, Sligo, Limerick, Castleknock, Birr, Castlerea, Northwood, Dunshaughlin and the storied Fortunestown store in Dublin. The commencement of works in Newbridge was marked by a sod turning ceremony performed by Peter Carey, CEO of Kildare County Council.

Speaking at the sod turning, Peter Carey, CEO, Kildare County Council said the project demonstrates Lidl’s ongoing commitment to County Kildare. “Work on this new facility will bring a major jobs boost to the local area,” Carey said, “with up to 2,000 construction jobs created during the construction phase followed by a further 100 new full-time roles.

“The local community will also benefit from the construction of a new relief road,” he added, “to which Lidl has committed as part of the development.”

Alan Barry, director of property and central services, Lidl Ireland added that the new centre will allow Lidl to handle greater volumes of produce from its 200-strong network of Irish suppliers. “Lidl already sources over €700 million worth of Irish food and drink products from these suppliers,” Barry said.

The construcution project is one of the biggest in Ireland this year, and will be overseen by John Paul Construction.
